IA Summit 2016 - Backstage
The 2016 IA Summit will take place in Atlanta, Georgia beginning on May 4. We are aware of and concerned by the possible pending approval of Georgia House Bill 757 by the Governor of the State. As such, we want to take this opportunity to reiterate our unwavering commitment to hosting an event that will be welcoming to all.
The IA Summit’s core purpose and mission is to provide a safe space for the exchange of ideas: “The IA Summit exists to promote discourse and learning about the intentional design of information environments. It is a gathering of the practitioners from around the globe who practice and teach Information Architecture and other design-related disciplines… All attendees are welcome and safe in the conference environment.”
The IA Summit is committed to have diverse voices represented. Every speaker, volunteer, and attendee at the conference agrees to the code of conduct which states our dedication “to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion.”
Despite our efforts to ensure a safe and welcoming event, we are concerned that if this bill passes, some members of our community will still not be comfortable with traveling to a state where they see discrimination enshrined in law.
The proximity of the Summit’s start date to the bill’s approval deadline makes it impossible to consider rescheduling or relocating the event elsewhere. While the Summit encourages its diverse community to stand together in support of true equality and inclusivity, it also respects those community members who might prefer to not attend. The Summit’s cancellation policy can be found on our website.
We respect fellow members of the community for their statements on this matter. We are united in our concern for how the legislation will directly affect the vibrant communities who have welcomed us to Georgia.
As information architects, we believe in a future defined by open exchanges of ideas and information. We hope that our community’s efforts will continue to create a world with inclusive, welcoming spaces for all.
In peace and equality,
The 2016 IA Summit
