IA Summit 2011
Over the years, there has been a continuous conversation during the IA Summit about how practitioners can better engage with business leaders and much has been discussed about “speaking the language of the business”. This year we invite Nate Silver to speak to the power of numbers and how insight is derived from that understanding.
Nate has been called a “spreadsheet psychic” and “number-crunching prodigy” by the media for his ability to use statistics to reveal insights that are truly good predictors of outcomes, in various fields. He comes out of the world of baseball statistics, where he created PECOTA, short for Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm, which evaluates and predicts player performance in baseball.
During the 2008 presidential election primaries, he turned his sights and his amazing predictive abilities and forecasting models to the game of politics and current events – with incredible results: he correctly predicted the winner of 49 of the 50 states. His analysis and work gained ample media attention through his website, FiveThirtyEight.com.
With the theme of “asking better questions” permeating the sessions that will make up the Summit program, we could not be happier to kick things off with Nate exploring how applied statistics can have a meaningful impact to problems of all sizes. We look forward to learning from his expertise and exploring how an understanding of numbers can be a powerful tool for our community of practice to be better equipped to have the types of exchanges with business we have always needed to engage in.
